flac to vbr mp3

Requiring two external programs (flac and lame) this method will quickly convert your flac files to mp3 on the command line (so you can play them on your phone).

flac -cd input.flac |lame -V -h – output.mp3

Done and done. A slight modification to do everything in the directory is:

for file in *.flac; do flac -cd “$file” | lame -V -h – “${file%.flac}.mp3”; done

which is a slight mod of this method (to use vbr, increasing quality when needed and saving file size when not).

“Sticks and Stones” lyrics

From the soundtrack to “How to Train Your Dragon”, performed by Jon Thor Birgisson:

Eyes open wide, blinded by the sun now
Orange and white, dark red, green and yellow
Rainbow colors! Do not hide, see the view!
Step aside, go through!

Against the light, too strong, blow a fuse now
Everything bright, new songs, burning shoes
The look in your eyes! Break our bones into half!
Scream and shout and do laugh!

Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)
Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Bursting through the seams
Open your eyes and see – You see

Inn um ermar, upp hryggjarsúluna
Yfir skóg, flæðir niður brekkuna
Allt upp í loft! Ég mun aldrei gleyma!
Því ég mun aldrei!

Hleypur um, rífur, leysir flækjurnar
(Upp með rótum) Með blik í augum!
Stórmerki, undur, brjótum bein í sundur!

Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)
Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Bursting through the seams
Open your eyes and see

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Right beyond the trees
Show you how you’ll be

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Bursting through the seams
Open your eyes and see – You see

Stay close to me : Count one, two, three
Up in your sleeves : You’re right beyond trees
Stay close to me : Count one, two, three
Up in your sleeves : Burst through the seams

Open your eyes and see
You see – You see

Loud Music is Underrated

I don’t mean blasting it, but occasionally turn up the dials on your speakers some (this of course assumes you have reasonable speakers). You’ll hear all sorts of things you generally miss out on (but you may occasionally annoy your neighbors).

Sister Hazel – Everything Else Disappears

You should listen to this song. As part of a playlist of a hundred or more, and then after you’ve heard it a few times, really listen to it. So good. Which raises some interesting questions about the rest of Sister Hazel, which is not that good. I mean it’s not awful, but it’s not brilliant. But better a couple of brilliant tracks than a bunch of middle of the road.

Rhythmbox missing codecs?

Getting this message? “Message: Automatic missing codec installation not supported (helper script missing)” try installing “gnome-codec-install” and then giving it another run. It will tell you which packages you are missing and prompt install. Very elegant.

Free Music

So Amazon in their infinite wisdom has made available a large number of free mp3 tracks. You can find them here. I can’t say that I’d enjoy listening to them all but to each their own.
